According to the Thais, there's a lot of difference between a trainer (coach) and a Kru (teacher). A trainer is someone who trains fighters to build their strength and develop skills and techniques, he can be a good fighter and shows pads and conducts good work-outs. But a Kru teaches his students to be a good person by giving his knowledge and experience.
'Kru' is a Thai word which means the person who teaches or passes on knowledge to pupils. Normally Krus are highly respected in Thai Society. They are knowledgeable, full of perseverance. They practice high moral standards in their way of life, leading very respectable lives. They always devote themselves to performing their teaching commitment until their pupils attain full knowledge and are successful in their fields. Even the best or even the Greatest Champions is not guaranteed to be able to teach what he knows or pass on that invaluable knowledge. Some of the qualities he should have are - a full understanding of the History, Traditions and Techniques of Muay Thai & be able to communicate it to all levels of Students. He should be of good character & have respect for himself, others and all of life. He should be willing to totally commit himself to the endeavour of becoming a Master of this Martial Art no matter how long it may take. He should also show the same commitment to his Students!
The Mongkon/Mongkol (Mangala) is the traditional Thai head band similar to belts owrn in other martial arts. 12th khan is almost like a black belt 3rd degree in other arts. But, Degrees are not easily given in Muay, so 10th khan and above are not numerous like other arts' black belts. Red-Yellow and above conduct do gratings for students.
